Maternity/Newborn

We are trying to develop an innovative program built in a “resident centred” way while also incorporating the latest competency based “Triple C” curriculum theories and the nine Queen’s Family Medicine Domains of Clinical Care (DOCCs).

We will emphasize direct observation with the goal of daily field notes and please remember, while we are offering a new program, many of our preceptors are already experienced teachers.

As an FYI, Queen's Family Medicine divides the calendar into 13 four week blocks of time per year.

Here is what we have planned for...

MATERNAL AND NEWBORN CARE

  • three 24 hour shifts a month for 3 months within blocks 2-6
  • resident to be assigned shifts between two specific preceptors as much as possible for continuity of supervision
  • goal to attain competency early on so that resident is competent for later FM practice obstetrical patients who will be followed in the office and, when ready to deliver, will be notified for attendance at delivery (this will be given priority)
  • we plan to be flexible enough to add more shifts at block 7 or later on in program if the resident is interested in Obs or should they need additional exposure
  • this allows sharing the Obs learning experience with Queen's FM residents from the Kingston - Thousand Islands site after at block 7 or later
  • if resident interested in Obs, we will try to assign them to a FM preceptor who does Obs as well
  • early newborn care through inpatient hospitalist exposure
